Telenav Brings Their Expertise to Techsylvania

Among the many innovative companies being represented at this year’s Techsylvania conference, is Telenav. They’re a leading provider of location-based platform services. Their services allow them to deliver enhanced location-based services to developers, auto manufacturers and end users through various distribution channels, including wireless carriers. With their headquarters based in California, the company is quickly expanding across the globe, including a brand new location in Japan.

One  of their well known products, Scout, is a personalized navigation system and search for cars, computers and phones. They also have a product called Location Score, which is the mobile industry’s first tool that measures accuracy in mobile advertising. The company further positioned itself as a leader in navigation when it purchased Skobbler in early 2014.

Irina Rotaru, Human Resources Manager for the company took time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions.

1. What are you working on these days at Telenav?

Since the very beginning of skobbler and continuing with Telenav, we have been supporting the OpenStreetMap community. Our teams are still very much focused on fostering the community and contributing, for example by developing necessary tools or improving the data ourselves. Making OSM data accessible and easy to handle also allows us and our customers to build industry-leading location-based services and products.

Currently we are working in three main directions: First of all, there are our end-consumer GPS navigation & maps apps for both iOS and Android. Then, there is our b2b business line, combining automotive/connected cars and our SDK business with clients from the travel and accessories industry, such as TripAdvisor, Tripwolf, Triposo and Skully. Furthemore there is the focus in automotive industry where we are aiming to come with innovative solutions for the connected cars technologies.

Besides our effort in building products we invest time in growing our people. Being a company with HQ in Sunnyvale gives us an advantage to learn from directly form the valley’s experiences. We think that people are as important as the products, so taking the time to create the learning environment for them is one of our highest priorities.

2. What events do you support and why?

As a company, we particularly value the entrepreneurial ecosystem in Cluj. We got involved in the startup community in 2012, when the first SWCLuj edition was organized, and have since then beensupporting more and more events and initiatives in this area. We are very proud to see how fast the community is growing.

Techsylvania is a very good example of the strong impact the Cluj area has on the national level of entrepreneurship. Even though it was the first edition last year, we had big names on the list of speakers. Apart from that, we believe that by supporting the development of others, we assure our own growth. The ecosystem in Cluj is a real proof of this: In the past 4 years the entrepreneurship exploded with innovative ideas, bringing along more and more skilled and highly-qualified people.

3. What is it like to work in a product company?

First of all, it is very challenging, because being involved in all stages of development and release makes you assume a part of the ownership for the whole product. You feel both the excitement of watching your products growing and being delivered to the final user, as well as the pressure of delivery, the responsibility for the decisions taken. We are nonetheless convinced that the final reward is much higher, than just the peace of mind that results from “getting things done”.
